Standard AS/A level requirements of five GCSEs at grade A*-C apply. In addition, a minimum of grade C in English GCSE is required.
Plus a minimum APS Score: 40

Aim
This course provides an introduction to the study of communication and culture which covers the personal level of communication and students†own experience of cultural products and practices, as well as the interaction between the individual and the broader cultural environment.
Content Year 1 - AS level
Unit 1: Understanding communication and culture
· The nature of culture
· Definitions of culture
· The meanings and practices of everyday life
· High culture and popular culture
· Verbal and non-verbal communication
· Identity and self-presentation
· Group communication
· Reading images and products.

Unit 2: The individual and contemporary culture
· Coursework - a choice of alternative topics set by the exam board
· Communication, culture and the individual - investigation (500 words)
· Exploration of cult, products and practices (1,000 words)
· Presentation.

Year 2 - A level
Unit 3: Communicating culture
· Study of a cultural site
· Dominant and alternative approaches to communication and culture
· Capitalism, globalisation and consumerism.

Unit 4: Communication and culture in practice
· Study of a cultural site

· Dominant and alternative approaches to communication and culture

· Capitalism, globalisation and consumerism.

Progression/career opportunities
The course combines well with a number of different subjects and will allow students to progress on to a range of Higher Education courses or into careers in marketing, business or the media in particular.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
