About this course
You will need to be fluent in spoken and written English and a language spoken in one of the bilingual communities in London. Applicants must have some experience of interpreting in the public sector in the UK, this could be with friends, family or other community members. To be considered for this course candidates need to complete a short initial assessment.

What will I learn?
The Community Interpreting programme is designed to train learners to work as interpreters and bridge the language gap between the service provider and the service user in areas such as health, social services, housing, law and immigration. To develop competence in interpreting skills by introducing a variety of interpreting skills and modes and by adhering to the code of ethics of interpreters. To introduce students to the different Public Services areas and familiarise them with a variety of procedures and terminologies. To enable the students to use their language skills appropriately and reflect their social and cultural backgrounds in specific situations. This course is for Bi-lingual candidates who would like to acquire the necessary training and accreditation, to enable them to work as interpreters in different Public Service areas.
How will I be taught?
This course is taught in a classroom using varied teaching and learning techniques. You have a mixture of group and pair activities and practical activities such as role-plays. We also use quality ICT resources such as video, digital audio and the internet to aid the teaching and learning.
How will I be assessed?
You are given regular homework assignments which are assessed by the tutor in informal tutorials. Assessment is on-going and learners are expected to keep a portfolio of work to be submitted at the end of the course.
What could I do next?
You could progress to further interpreting or a Diploma course such as DPSI.
