How is the course structured?

The Level 3 QCF Understanding Mental Health Care course is divided into six units. These are :

Unit 1 - Understand the legal, policy and service framework in mental health
Learning Outcomes
- Know the legal and current policy framework for mental health
- Know the service framework for mental health
- Understand the rights of individuals using services and of those who give informal support

Unit 2 - Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
Learning Outcomes
- Understand how duty of care contributes to safe practice

Unit 3 - Understand mental well-being and mental health promotion
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the different views on the nature of mental well - being and mental health and the factors that may influence both across the life span. - Know how to implement an effective strategy for promoting mental well-being and mental health with individuals and groups.

Unit 4 - Understand mental health problems
Learning Outcomes
- Know the main forms of mental ill health
- Know the impact of mental ill health on individuals and others in their social network.

Unit 5 - Understand mental health interventions
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the needs of people with mental health problems
- Understand the strengths and limitations of the main interventions in mental health
- Know the key principles and factors that underpin the choice of mental health interventions

Unit 6 - Understand care and support planning and risk management in mental health
Learning Outcomes
- Understand how to work within the care and support planning process - Understand how to work within a risk management process

Course Assessments

This course is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following the standard guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.

Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by the awarding body, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme
