This course is a post qualification course for qualified Dental Nurses. The course will be delivered by Dentrain Professionals Ltd and a portfolio that will be completed by the dental nurse whilst being supervised in the workplace. You will be provided with a Module file and a Portfolio by Dentrain.
The course may be taken as either classroom based in Bolton or distance learning.
The distance learning may be started any time throughout the year & must be completed within a 6 week period.
The classroom based course is run at set times throughout the year. It is a 2 day course, 4 weeks apart. Please contact us for the next available start date.

About this course
To complete this course the Dental Nurse must:
-be qualified (proof of this will need to be provided prior to a place being allocated on the course)
-be working in a dental surgery and has access to patients needing impressions
-be registered with the GDC
-have an up to date BLS certificate (proof of this will need to be provided prior to a place being allocated on the course)
-have a supervising dentist who will supervise the impression taking on suitable patients
-complete the assessment
-be able to complete the portfolio, in the required time scale.

Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course dental nurses will be able to:
1) Demonstrate a knowledge of Health and Safety, Infection Control, Anatomy and Medical Emergencies
2) Discuss the various restorative procedures that require the use of dental impressions and the most suitable materials for each.
3) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding through written assignments
4) Demonstrate competency in taking dental impressions under the supervision of a dentist through completion of a portfolio.
The portfolio
Log sheet
You must carry out 20 impressions with a minimum 12 must be suitable for use, impressions on:
- 9 adult patients – 6 dentate and 3 edentulous
- 3 paediatric patients
INCLUDING a mixture of alginate and elastomer and upper and lower impressions
The log competency sheet must be completed for each impression taken and the supervising dentist must sign each one prior to submission to Dentrain.
Case studies
You will need to produce a report for two of your patients. You will need to use the sub headings provided and type a report of approximately 1000 words.
- 1 adult patient
- 1 paediatric patient
