Games Design
Computer and video games are the fastest growing, most exciting art form of the 21st Century. On this course, you will come up with game ideas to engage the players of the future, and learn the skills to make these ideas reality. You will be introduced to the practical skills involved in Games Design and gain an understanding and knowledge of the skills required to work in the industry. You will produce your own games and gain a deep understanding of why existing games work (or, sometimes, don't work). You will produce 2D and 3D games, develop game story ideas and work to real world deadlines. You will also design and animate computer game graphics and game assets (levels, characters and props) using 3D software.

There are 18 units for the extended diploma and 12 units for the diploma which are covered over 2 years. You may specialise in Games Design or Games Development depending what pathway you wish to pursue. Games Design Here is a selection of some of the subjects you will be taught on the course: Digital Graphics for Computer Games - The development and design of a game graphics Sound for Computer Games - Produce sound and sound effects for games Flash for Computer Games - Make a Flash game following industry practice 3D Modelling Produce models of 3D objects and characters 3D Environments Create 3D game environments (levels) 3D Animation Animate 3D objects and characters Games Design To generate ideas for a games concept Computer Game Story Development Creating a story and narrative for games Develop cut scene and game cinematic elements and ideas Games Development Games Development Develop Computer Games (Unreal Engine) - Learn to develop computer games using the widely known games engine. You will design and develop levels including coding. Computer Animation (Flash) - Learn the principles of animation where you will design and develop 2D animations. Computer Games Platforms and Technologies - Learn about the various platforms for gaming. Computer Game Design - Learn to design your own game using gaming standards. 3D Modelling (3DS Max) - Learn to design and develop 3D models using leading industry software. 3D Animation (3DS Max) - Learn to design and develop animations using leading industry software. Computer Games Story Development - Write your own games story. Event Driven Programming (Visual Basic) - Learn to code. Procedural Programming (C++) - Learn the principles of coding. Object Oriented Programming (C++) - Advanced programming to further develop your skills to prepare you for the gaming industry. Web Applications (PHP, HTML, JavaScript and CSS) - Learn to create your own websites using coding methods. You will develop skills in: Image manipulation and digital painting techniques for computer games Students complete projects and assignments using practical skills and written reports. There are no exams. Each unit is assessed as a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Technology Campus Students need one of the following: 5 GCSEs C or above including English Language A level 2 First Diploma at Merit or above including GCSE English Language at C or above or a level 2 Functional Skill in English Students should: If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.

Additional information

This course introduces you to the processes involved with creating a computer game. You will learn the skills of coding and asset creation including graphics and sound production.
