Course programme

Our degree programmes recognise the increasing importance of computer systems in fields such as commerce, industry, government and science. Strong practical and analytical skills developed during your studies will leave you well-placed to meet the growing global demand for graduates in this fast-moving industry.

Your degree

All programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Our four-year MEng degrees allow for an in-depth study of selected topics, and enable you to build on your skills towards the expertise required for research. An international dimension is provided by our Computer Science (International Programme) MEng, for which your third-year will be spent abroad at another of the world’s leading universities in Europe, the USA, Asia or Australia.

All degrees feature common compulsory courses in the first two years of study. These cover the essential material required by all computer scientists regardless of interest or specialisation. This structure enables you to defer, until the end of the second year, your decision on whether to opt for the three-year BSc or the more in-depth four-year MEng. Applying for an MEng initially helps keep these options open.

Our programmes feature a wide and varied range of specialised options that are available to you throughout your degree. These are primarily taught in the department, but you may take advantage of UCL’s excellence across many disciplines by selecting courses provided by other departments at UCL.

Your learning

Each course usually lasts for one term and consists of around 150 hours of work, including around 30 hours of lectures. These are supplemented by practical laboratory classes and/or problem classes as appropriate.

All courses are assessed, usually by a mixture of coursework assignments and an unseen written examination at the end of the academic year. You must pass your courses in order to progress to the following year and you will also be required to pass a core skills programming course in the first year.

To transfer or continue on to one of the MEng degrees, you must have demonstrated excellent academic performance by the end of the second year.

Your career

Our graduates have previously secured careers with global IT consultancies, as IT analysts with City of London banks and as IT specialists within manufacturing industries. However, your UCL computer science degree will provide you with an excellent foundation for almost any career.

Alternatively, you may also choose to pursue further academic study such as a Master’s degree or PhD research.

The department takes pride in helping its graduates develop and maintain their careers. We can help to place you with key companies for summer internships and projects and provide a conduit for companies to advertise careers opportunities to students. Once in a career, you can keep in touch with your former classmates and get help with your professional development through our extensive alumni network.

The following examples are drawn from data collected on behalf of the Higher Education Statistics Agency for the 2005-2007 graduating cohorts as part of a survey of first career destinations of UK/EU graduates six months only after graduation.

  • Software Engineer, Accenture (2005)
  • Technology Risk Analyst, BDO Stoy Hayward (2005)
  • Systems Analyst, BG Group (2005)
