About this course

During the Foundation year you will develop the necessary academic skills and enhance your mathematics skills to study at degree level. You will be introduced to software development, computer hardware and computer networks. A Business Information Systems module will give you an introduction to the role within organisations of information systems and the processes by which information systems are developed.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to apply your skills to a range of practical problems. In your first year of the degree, you will gain a solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, including information systems modelling and design, software development, networks, web technologies and mathematics tailored to computing.

In your second year you will learn about databases, operating systems and data structures and will conduct a software engineering group project.

For your final year you will have the chance to specialise in areas such as mobile application development, network security, distributed systems and artificial intelligence.

You will have opportunities to gain valuable work experience including a work-based learning module in your second year and an optional, year-long work placement between your second and final year.

In addition to your practical skills, you will learn about the social and cultural implications of the digital revolution, gaining an understanding of professional and ethical issues in computing.

Think of almost any business sector that exists and then imagine it without computer systems. Tough, isn’t it? That is because industries as diverse as agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and financial services all rely on computers and software to function effectively.

As a graduate from the University of East London, you will have a solid understanding of the main disciplines that fall under the computer science banner and our status as a Microsoft IT and CompTIA Academy means that your degree will be respected within the IT sector and further afield.

A computer science degree is the perfect springboard for a career in almost any sector not just the tech and digital industries.

You will be qualified for a wide range of roles including:

information security
software design
tech support
software engineering
network, system or database administration
systems architecture
This qualification also lends itself to postgraduate study and research or, if you have an entrepreneurial impulse, we can give you help and advice on launching your own start-up.
