About this course

The Computing for Business course is either three years full-time, four years with an optional one-year work placement or five years part-time. We’re fully accredited by the British Computer Society, the chartered institute for IT, so our course will set you on the path to become a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).

In your first year, you’ll cover core components of computing in business such as information systems modelling and design, programming, web technologies and network systems. Our practical approach to learning will ensure you get plenty of hands-on experience.

You’ll also complete a year-long project of your choice in your final year, with the chance to work with others nationally and internationally.

There’s also the option to undertake a year-long industrial placement after your second year, usually paid. We have long-standing links with many well-known employers who can offer you a worthwhile placement. Like many of our students, you could go on to gain permanent employment with your placement organisation.

IT skills really matter in today’s business world, from small start-ups to huge multinational companies. There’s a shortage of people with up-to-date skills and understanding, and organisations need these to fully realise their potential.

Our Computing for Business graduates combine business knowledge with technical ability. You’ll be qualified for many different IT jobs including systems/business/information analysis, systems development and integration and web applications development. You could also progress quickly into management roles in the IT and information systems fields.

For graduates who want to continue their studies at postgraduate level, the Computing for Business undergraduate course provides a suitable entry route to a variety of master’s courses, both at UEL and elsewhere.

Some of our graduates work with local businesses to develop their projects from the initial idea to a complete solution as full stack developers. We have graduates working with web technologies, making and developing apps, working on information analysis, big data and supporting IT infrastructures.

The combination of theory and practical projects that you’ll experience during your course will give you a head start when looking for a job. You’ll have hands-on experience of using open source software such as PHP, Hadoop, MySQL and corporate software such as Oracle and SAS.
