Who is this course for?
The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Computing (HNC) will prepare you for employment both with specialist computing companies and in industry, commerce and public service in general. It is also for those who wish to become computing professionals with immediately applicable technical and general knowledge and skills. It is also designed to respond to the needs of industry and commerce to provide career opportunities mainly for those who are in or plan to enter employment in a business system role. This course will provide a firm base of advanced knowledge together with theoretical, practical and personal skills needed for a wide range of positions within computing. E-commerce, MIS, systems design, web site development, database management are areas suitable for applicants taking this qualification.

What qualification will I receive?
BTEC Higher National Certificate in Computing.

Where can it lead?
You could go onto university to convert the HNC qualification into an Honours degree. The course is recognised by the Institute of Data Processing and Management (IDPM) for exemptions from their Diploma and 4 modules from their Higher Diploma course.

What will I study?
Subjects you will study include: web page design, database concepts, information systems, computer platforms, programming concepts, project management, visual programming, systems analysis, networking technology and information systems projects.

The course has been developed with the involvement of industry to ensure that the content continues to be relevant to new trends in ICT and provides good career prospects in computing, systems and software, both in the UK and abroad. In order to achieve the award you must complete 10 unit values of study. The course consists of a range of ten units over two years and each year is divided up into two semesters of approximately 17 weeks each.

How will I be taught?
You will be taught through lectures and practical workshops. You must be prepared to study in your own time as well as attending all classes.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through coursework assignments, project work and end of semester examinations, with a strong emphasis on continuous assessment of the knowledge and skill that you gain during the course.

You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course and the College offers a comprehensive range of student services, including learning and language support and guidance.
