Course programme

The course caters for those wishing to work in a variety of carpentry and joinery environments. Your time will be split between our own workshop and work experience. Whilst in our workshop you will be involved in a variety of external contract work, as well as site maintenance. The training will include practical as well as theoretical work.

Course Content:

The qualification is made up of a number of units that will enable you to demonstrate competence in a variety of construction activities including:

  • Handle and Store Resources
  • Contribute to Work Relationships
  • Contribute to Providing Work Platforms
  • Preparation and Use of Portable Power Tools
  • Maintenance and Use of Woodworking Hand Tools
  • Use Basic Wood Jointing Techniques

There are no formal entry requirements. However an interest in practical activities alongside an enthusiasm for working with wood are essential. Previous hand tool experience is desirable.

To gain the full qualification you will need to complete a set number of units. Each unit is assessed separately so that unit certificates can be awarded where necessary.

As you will be producing an end product, the quality of your work will be assessed by our staff, and will have to meet the demands of external customers, as well as passing any necessary quality standards.

You will develop a portfolio of your work throughout the course to demonstrate your knowledge and skills. This is a good starting point for entry into the building industry. We aim to provide a good introduction into the world of work and provide a link between school leavers and industry.
