This Construction Management course runs in 2016/17.

Construction management demands professional input at all stages from concept to detailed design, construction and maintenance. This course will give you the skills necessary to become a highly-trained professional in this discipline.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This Construction Management course will teach you how to blend traditional design skills with modern technologies, whilst helping to give you the skills necessary to become a highly-trained professional in this very demanding but rewarding discipline.

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The core themes of the course include: construction technology, building science and structures, the legal and regulatory framework of building, engineering surveying and construction processes, construction management, contractual procedures, and construction finance.

In the first year you will be introduced to the fundamental topics of building design and the construction process which are essential to practitioners in all of the construction professions. The first year will be taught in common with other building disciplines (Architectural Technology, Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management) giving you the opportunity to experience and understand the construction team and enable transfer between courses.

Your second and final years will then develop more advanced knowledge of construction technology and management practice, and take you through the finer details, including law, finance and management skills, preparing you for a career in construction management.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your timetable has a range of learning opportunities, from lectures, seminars and tutorials to laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. You will also be allocated a personal tutor, who will review and discuss your progress with you, and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 20%; practical or project work 20%; group work 10%; presentations, posters etc.10%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours which breaks down as follows:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, tutorials and project work (or later, individual project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials, CAD or drawing studio each week

Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time – including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
