Throughout the Construction Management Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship, you will work to improve, expand and enhance your abilities to allow you to excel in a construction related role. Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at those who are already working in a construction environment and have responsibility for the work of others and resources. Throughout Construction Management Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship, you will work to improve, expand and enhance your abilities to allow you to excel in a construction role.
What will I learn?
The Construction Management Higher Apprenticeship Level 4 apprenticeship is made up of mandatory units which cover the essential skills required for working within a construction environment.
- Maintaining Systems for Health, Safety, Welfare and Environmental Protection in the Workplace
- Assessing and Recommending Work Methods for Carrying Out Site Operations in the Workplace
- Planning Activities and Resources to Meet Work Requirements in the Workplace
- Co-ordinating and Organising the Control of Work in the Workplace
- Controlling Work Progress against Agreed Programmes in the Workplace
- Allocating and Monitoring the Use of Plant, Equipment or Machinery in the Workplace
There are then a variety of optional units to choose from which focus on the specific tasks you carry out within your role which could include:
- Maintaining the Dimensional Accuracy of Work in the Workplace
- Controlling Work against Agreed Standards in the Workplace
- Contributing to the Control of Work Quantities and Costs in the Workplace
What award will I achieve?
Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Management, which includes:
- NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Construction Site Supervision (Construction)
- Technical Certificate – Level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment
What next?
Possible progression to a Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship or Foundation Degree in Construction Management
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will take place through a series of projects, assignments and vocational evidence through workplace activities.
What are the Entry Requirements
Candidates will be working either on construction sites or in construction offices in trainee to middle management roles and will have gained a level 3 qualification in a construction related subject or equivalent. Applicants with appropriate prior experience of work in the sector may also be considered. It is necessary to attend an interview with the Work Based Learning team and the Construction assessor/course tutor, complete basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy. You will be expected to have at least basic numeracy and literacy functional skills level 2 if you do not have a GCSE’s in English and Maths.
Attendance
One day per week attendance at Colchester Institute is required and this will be in conjunction with assessment in the workplace. Attendance and progress is closely monitored by the assessor towards the qualifications and your employer will be informed of any non-activity.
Requirements in the workplace
Students are required to be employed in a suitable work placement providing construction related tasks in a supervisory role, such as construction site management, quantity surveying or site engineering. Skilled and knowledgeable staff in the workplace will be necessary to support the apprentice.

Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.
