Subject guide

Year 1

The first year is identical for both construction degrees thereby providing you with the flexibility to switch between programmes prior to the second year if you so desire.

Year 2

In the second year, the business, financial management, legal and planning aspects introduced in the first year are further developed as are the more technically oriented construction subjects.

Year 3
- Optional placement year

Final Year

The final year besides further enhancing and consolidating your management and technical capabilities provides you with the opportunity to explore in depth a construction-related topic of your choice.

Learning, teaching & assessment

We employ a wide variety of teaching and learning styles on our degrees, and we place particular emphasis on project based learning and hands on experience. Visiting lecturers from the construction industry bring real life experience to your learning.

Assessment is through a combination of project work, case studies, practical reports and coursework (approx. 50%), and exams (approx. 50%). Your final degree classification is not only based on your final year studies, but also on your second, and if relevant, your sandwich year.

Placement year

If you choose our four year sandwich programme your third year is spent in a paid industrial placement of direct relevance to your studies. The value a placement adds is immense – you will grow in knowledge, experience, confidence and maturity, and gain organisational and time management skills.

Our experienced staff will help you find a suitable placement with companies such as Carillion, Balfour Beatty Construction, Interserve, Shepherd Construction, Mace, EC Harris and AYH.

Professional accreditation

Our programmes are fully recognised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) through its partnership agreement with the University. Graduates are therefore eligible to enter the RICS’s Assessment of Professional Competence training scheme.

Career prospects

There is always a demand for competent construction and project managers without whom the infrastructure, so necessary to today’s society, could not exist. When you graduate you will possess the necessary skills to work for civil engineering contractors, building and project management companies, local government and in the service industries. The management, transferable and technical skills developed during your studies will also be attractive to other professions and there is significant potential for successful careers in such diverse fields as finance, logistics and general management.

Personal development

Construction modules not only adopt the most appropriate approach in order to provide you with the best learning opportunity for that particular subject, but are also designed so that you to develop your presentation, report writing, teamwork and decision making abilities – life skills all employees demand. You can also obtain one-to-one support in all aspects of study and communication skills through the University’s Learning Development Centre.
