UCAS Institution/Course Codes: Institution Code: P60, Course Code: W104 The FdA Contemporary Fine Art Practice course will aim to empower students with a set of creative and current skills required to produce vibrant and professional work, the practical knowledge gained will be underpinned and contextualised through study of art theory and context, allowing informed and progressive work through a multidisciplinary approach. The course will also seek to develop the professional context to student’s practice, through developing a solid understanding of business practice, as well as exhibition and promotional experience. Students will leave the course with a strong personal practice and the confidence and ability to independently take it forwards into the arena of the Creative Industries or, if desired, the potentially the opportunity to top up their FdA to a BA with one year of study at level 6 with Plymouth University. The course will also offer students an exciting opportunity to study Fine Art within a beautiful area of the country with a thriving creative scene.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with a subject-specific Level 3 course such as a National Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma, A Level, Access to Higher Education Course. Applications are invited from a wide range of backgrounds including mature students who hold relevant work experience and/or qualifications, and/or learning through experience. We also welcome applications from more recent Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Level 3), A Level or BTEC Extended Diploma in General Art & Design students. International applicants will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5/6 achieved within the last two years to apply for this course. Applicants will normally be invited for interview and should be able to show a recent portfolio of work. Course Content The Contemporary Fine Art Practice Foundation Degree aims to equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to be able to establish an exciting and viable career as an artist. The first year of studies encompasses fine art painting, print, sculpture and other disciplines and you will develop the skills needed to explore and expand your use of visual language and your understanding of contemporary fine art practice. Having strengthened your personal practice in year one the second year is concerned with helping you to develop your own personal practice, building the specific creative skills appropriate for you, and substantiating the ideas and context to your practice. Underpinning both years of study are the theoretical and professional elements to your practice. You will build a strong contextual knowledge and understanding of concepts around your work; this is achieved through lectures, artist’s talks, gallery and personal research alike. Within the course we place a strong emphasis on your professional practice, teaching you skills of business practice, self promotion, networking and how to exhibit your work, this empowers you with the skills to be able to succeed in taking your work into the world. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed on course work which will typically be a mixture of practical art work, sketchbooks, diaries, reports, presentations, exhibitions and two essays. Progression Those who successfully complete the Foundation Degree in Contemporary Fine Art will be invited to attend the Plymouth University graduation ceremony held in September. Successful students may decide to apply for a top up further year at Plymouth University to study an Honours Degree. The progression route for this course will be confirmed during the validation process. Fees The course fees for all students for this course will be £6000 per annum for 2016/17.
