The opportunities provided by advances in to create and communicate with imagery has never been more exciting, diverse, challenging and accessible. This Foundation Degree in Contemporary Photography Practice recognises the fundamental changes and will provide students with the technical skills, a greater engagement with the theoretical aspects, improved creativity and elements important in professional practice of the ever changing and evolving industry of contemporary photographic practices. The course covers a wide ranging curriculum examining and the techniques and technology employed in location, fashion, studio, portraiture, landscape and client led photography. The students will be encouraged to experiment with all the different types of photography and allowing them to explore many contemporary contexts providing opportunities to work with graphics, book design, exhibiting, installation and filmmaking. The work based learning is a core element of the course and fundamental to the eventual employability of the graduates. The students will have to either work with a professional company or practitioner related to the sector or work as a member of a photo agency set up and run by the students themselves. The research modules will provide an underpinning knowledge of how visual communication is used and consumed. Course programme

Applicants should normally be at least 18 years of age. Applications are welcomed from candidates with a subject-specific Level 3 course such as a National Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma, A Level, Access to Higher Education Course with 120 UCAS points achieved. Applications are invited from a wide range of backgrounds including mature students who hold relevant work experience and/or qualifications, and/or learning through experience. International applicants will be required to have an IELTS score of 5.5/6 achieve within the last two years to apply for this course. Applicants will normally be invited for interview and should be able to show a recent portfolio of work. Course Content Over the two years students will learn how to reflect on their own practice, to analyse and evaluate their work to allow them to improve their image making to professional standards. They will learn how to operate equipment with a high degree of technical skill, and be introduced to different possibilities of photography in a contemporary context from commercial to fine art. Research skills will be taught; students will learn how to understand photographs as active viewers, and there will be an emphasis on a contemporary and historical understanding of photography. This will enable students to put their own image making into context. The course takes advantage of the excellent facilities available including a fully equipped photographic studio, large darkrooms and access to a range of state-of-the- art still and moving image equipment. Professional practice is an important aspect of the course. Students will be given an understanding of the industry through talks, lectures, seminars and their own independent research. The final facet of the students’ learning is the application of this knowledge to industry-based situations, which will be experienced through live-briefs and work placements. The course furnishes students with the skills and professional portfolio to work in the industry. The programme structure consists of two Levels (4 and 5), each of which has a specific focus of development and assessment. Each Level is made up of a group of modules that you will have to study and pass so that you can accumulate the required number of learning credits you need to progress. The purpose of assessment is to measure the outcomes of your learning, in terms of the knowledge, understanding and skills you have demonstrated. It is a process that confirms your level of achievement against the learning outcomes of each module. During the programme, your work will be assessed on a continuous basis, allowing your progress to be carefully monitored. Assessment takes place in a variety of ways and provides you with regular and constructive feedback, both verbal and written, to help you to take increasing responsibility for your own learning. Progression Those who successfully complete the Foundation Degree in Contemporary Photography Practice will be invited to attend the Plymouth University graduation ceremony held in September. Successful students may decide to apply for a top-up further year at Plymouth University to study an Honours Degree in Photography. Progression onto other top-up courses at a variety of institutions is an option for those who wish to apply to study elsewhere. The students will also gain invaluable knowledge and experience in professional working practices and could work freelance in the growing and exciting creative arts industry. Fees The course fees for all students for this course will be £6000 per annum for 2016/17.
