Learners will be able to safely manage violence and physical aggression with the absolute minimum of force necessary and reasonable in the circumstances with different gradients of control which are ethical, dignified and legal and as a last resort. This should create a safe working environment for self and others. Our Ethical Care Control & Restraint methods and variations are a broad strategy employed when addressing challenging behaviour and having to use physical intervention against minor, moderate or extreme aggression. The professional needs to be able to address the different challenges with different gradients of control which are at all times ethical, dignified & legal. It is suitable for anyone working in an environment where someone may become so violent that they have to be restrained as a last resort.

Course programme

This two day course is designed to give delegates the tools to be able to deal with assaults & physical aggression, in a professional and respectful manner. Our training is ethical, safe, up to date and respectful to the client/service user. The methods we teach give staff the confidence to be able to deal with clients in a professional way; whilst having the tools to be able to deal with assaults should they happen. It is important to note that breakaway and control methods should only be used when all other means of communication have failed.

Outcomes: By the end of the two days

To give learners:

  • State the law in relation to physical restraint
  • Evaluate the risks associated with physical restraint and consider methods to reduce risks
  • Practice breakaway techniques from a variety of writs and body grabs, holds, punches and kicks
  • Practice safe holds to restrain a violent patient

Course contents

  • Introduction to physical restraint training
  • Physical interventions and the law – what we can and cannot do
  • The use of reasonable force
  • Criminal Law Act
  • Health & Safety Legislation
  • The Human Rights Act
  • The dangers and risks associated with positional asphyxia and excited delirium
  • The promotion of your own personal safety and assessing risk.
  • Breakaway methods which include:
  • Escaping from grabs or holds to the wrists, arms and body
  • Escaping from strangles, chokes, headlocks and bear hugs
  • Deflecting punches, blows and kicks
  • Passive restraint methods including:
  • The use of safe holds
  • Two person holds
  • Using bean bags to support people being held and to calm anger and other strong emotions
  • Areas of the body to avoid

Certification

Visual assessments are made by our tutors to ensure all learners practice and apply correctly the methods taught. Successful learners are issued with our Control & Restraint certificates. Certificates are valid for 12 months when a one day refresher course would be required.
