Offering an introduction to vintage and fashion corset making, this course will give you a basic understanding of the history of corsets and how they have manipulated the female body shape since the 16th Century.
Working in the dedicated university costume studios, you will be taught by Sarah Fraser, a specialist tutor in Costume construction. You will examine the changes in style and construction and look at how corsets change the shape of the body and the silhouette of costume.

Practical demonstrations will take you through the various stages of cutting and making your own bespoke vintage or fashion corset.
You must have completed the ‘Clothes Making Skills’ short course or have competent sewing skills and be able to use a sewing machine.

Course programme
You will then explore original and modern techniques of drafting a pattern and work with appropriate fabric of your own choice. You will learn specialist making skills throughout the construction process, including the use of steel and spiral boning techniques. You can even create cupped corsets if thats what takes your fancy.
