Cosmetic Legislation and Legal Requirements - a CPD accredited Distance Learning course including safety assessments, record keeping, labelling regulations, legal and trading standards information and much more

Available for anyone, anywhere in the world who wishes to sell their cosmetic products legally abiding by the legislation set out in the EU Cosmetic Regulations

There are so many different areas that you will need to address before you are able to sell your products legally that it can appear to be a baffling and complex task. Anything that you make that is sold to ‘go on’ the skin, whether it is a product that you put in the bath, wash off your skin or leave on your body, is certified as a cosmetic and therefore needs to be safety assessed and certified.

Whilst it is possible to purchase pre-certified soap bases, creams and other products, you will soon realise that the most fun to be had is in the making of the products themselves. Rather than you having to rely on pre-certifieds, we aim to unravel the mysteries surrounding the certification process and set you straight about what you need to do before, during and after your product manufacture.

This distance learning course is broken down into four manageable modules, each of which guide you through each step you need to take in order to get your products safety assessed and ready to sell. We will guide you through creating your own safety assessments so that the sets of ingredients you chose are as flexible, wide ranging and as comprehensive as possible.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to prepare your formulation for submission to your cosmetic chemist and understand what paperwork and records need to be kept for each batch of products you make. You will be able assemble the information that needs to be put on your product label and understand how to identify allergens contained within your essential and fragrance oils. You will understand how to weigh your products to meet Trading Standards requirements and prepare a Good Manufacturing Policy.

As part of the programme, we will provide you with templates, cosmetic chemist contacts, links to relevant and useful websites and other support material. We work closely with cosmetic chemists in order to ensure that our courseware is reviewed and updated when relevant changes to the EU Legislation are implemented.

Your tutor will assist you throughout the course and will offer email support during the course programme which will enable you to ask questions as and when they arise. Full written explanations, exercises, examples and other supporting documentation will be provided as part of the course material.

As part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, we no longer automatically supply you with paper copes of the course notes. The course notes, tests and assignments are downloadable via our members area for you to access at home. If you prefer us to print and post you a paper version of the notes, there is a £24 handling charge for this service. Please remember to select this option if you wish to us to print and send you the coursenotes and assignments.

The course is designed for you to study at home and can take as little as 3-4 weeks or up to 4-6 months depending on the time you can set aside for learning.

At the end of each module there will be a short test and an assignment for you to complete and return to your instructor so that she may assess the level of your understanding of the topics covered in that module.

In this distance learning course, we refer mostly to the safety assessment process for soap and bath products, but the rules will apply to any cosmetic product that you intend to make to sell in the UK.
