  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
Certificate in Cosmetic Make-up.

Where can it lead?
Advanced make-up qualifications in film, television and theatre.

What will I study?
Students will learn: how to assess clients for cosmetic make-up treatments, to carry out thorough consultations and give effective aftercare and home-care advice, cleansing, moisturising, application and procedure for make-up, eye treatments, day, evening and special occasion techniques, basic corrective methods, removal of make-up, health & safety, anatomy and physiology.

How will I be taught?
The college has a working beauty salon where students carry out treatments on paying members of the public.

How will I be assessed?
Students carrying out treatments on the general public which is assessed by observation and oral questioning by their tutor and collection of evidence to build a portfolio of work. Students will have written tests throughout the year on all theory within the course.

All non-NVQ courses are now externally assessed at certain times during the year - these are mandatory to pass the qualification. Some courses have two assessments.

External verification takes place at the end of the academic year (June) and any student on any course may be requested to attend (even if your course finished in the Spring term you may be called upon to attend the external verification visit). The process by which students are chosen to be assessed, during the external verification visit, is completely random and carried out by the External Verifier from VTCT. Those who are chosen will be notified as soon as possible during the Summer term. VTCT make this compulsory to attend - further details are printed in the course handbook.
