Alongside the core theoretical models of Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, you will have the opportunity to study several alternative aspects of counselling theory, these include: Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt. You will examine professional issues in relation to working with clients and you will also develop skills in case formulation and working with mental health issues. You will be provided with the opportunity to practice counselling skills in a safe and facilitative environment. The personal development aspect of the course looks at developing an understanding of self and the group process.
Emphasis is on the work based element of the award. This focuses upon the development and application of a range of work based competences and will prepare you to make the transition from learner to counsellor. Work placement is an integral part of the Foundation Degree in Counselling. 100 supervised placement hours will be completed in years 2 and 3.

About this course

Level 3 Certificate in Counselling (or relevant subject) and GCSE English Language C or above, (or equivalent).
Successful applicants will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and provide two references (one from an academic source).

What is this course about?
This qualification will provide in-depth professional training in counselling skills and theory with the opportunity to progress to an Hons Degree. It aims to provide a stimulating learning environment where students will develop a sound understanding of professional, legal and ethical issues. Counselling students progress through their degree by a cumulative process of gaining experience and knowledge. Both the vocational needs of a career in Counselling and the reflective analysis necessary for intellectual development are fostered. The more theoretical modules link with practice, both in the content of the modules (where practical examples illustrate Counselling theories) and in the way that student knowledge of the theoretical perspectives and analyses helps them to understand the role of the Counsellor.
A variety of teaching and learning strategies are employed in Counselling modules. We recognise that Foundation Degree students are different from `traditional students and therefore their learning is developed and supported in a different way. The programme has a strong emphasis on work based learning, reflective practice and competences and has been developed mindful of the amount of practical learning that is necessary. Accordingly, teaching and learning builds upon the practitioner s existing knowledge, skills, experience and qualification is practice centred, is aimed at integrating theory and practice, promotes an evidence-based approach to practice, and enables greater independence in the learner as the award progresses.
It is a course requirement that students undertake a minimum of ten hours of personal therapeutic work during the three years of the award. Students will be required to submit a statement at the end of the course detailing the personal therapeutic activities they have engaged in (these must be external to the course). Personal therapy could be identified as counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, group therapy, therapeutic workshops or retreats. Students will be asked to provide a rationale for classifying the activity as personally therapeutic. Engaging in personal therapy is seen as good practice and encouraged for your future career as well as during your course.
