Each unit has a learning outcome and assessment criteria which needs to be met in order for candidates to successfully complete the course.
To evidence learning and the criteria, students are required to produce a weekly journal; at least one self-review; an audio tape of skills practice plus a written evaluation; feedback on skills practice sessions and to complete an External Assessment set by the exam board.
To pass the course both portfolio work and the external Assessment need to be marked as ‘proficient’

Course programme
The course runs for a full academic year, one 3 hour session per week. Class time is made up of small and large group discussions, skills practice and tutor input.
Weekly sessions in class will cover the further development of counselling skills; some theory (Carl Rogers and Gerard Egan) practical skills development in role play.
The course will concentrate on developing students’ counselling skills and will follow seven units of study which are based on the process in the CPCAB model:
- Use counselling skills ethically and safely
- Manage helping interaction
- Communicate empathetic understanding
- Manage an active listening space
- Use self-awareness to facilitate helping work
- Use counselling skills in a consistent and logical way
- Use study skills to help manage learning
