This course is ideal for students who are interested in working outdoors in the heritage, countryside and environment sectors and who want to explore options and gain skills which would enable them to gain employment or progress onto higher level courses. It is a recognised full level 2 programme and therefore also allows progression onto level 3 programmes in different areas.

Course programme
Students undertaking the Certificate qualification will study three units, while those studying for the Diploma tackle six units in total. Each is made up of elements designed to offer the student a well rounded understanding of the subject, together with the chance to develop skills and knowledge essential for working outdoors or following further qualifications in this area.
Typical unit study will involve experience through field trips and the development of practical skills outdoors. Investigations will be conducted through field surveys, and research will also be undertaken in the library and on the computer. Practical work is backed up by lessons and guidance and you will complete practical assessments, written projects and presentations. These are assessesd to give evidence of achievement.
Units Covered:
Industry Experience: Work experience in your chosen area e.g. parks, woods, fish, horses, farming, outdoor leisure.
Industry and Organisations:Research into an area of your choice.
Estate skills: Skills needed to manage the countryside, such as maintaining fences and paths.
Trees, Woods and Forests: Woodland management, from how trees function to multi-objective forestry.
Introduction to Husbandry: Looking after plants and animals.
Countryside Recreation: Investigate how people use the countryside for recreation and understand the issues involved.
Habitat Establishment and Maintenance: Looking after wildlife and understanding habitats, including surveying and conservation.
Part of the course involves practical work placement, offering valuable experience within industry. This course will involve team working and studying in all weather conditions. As a result, those with an interest in the landscape, heritage industry, countryside or environment, together with a positive attitude and enthusiasm, will gain most from the course.
