About this course

The Advanced Diploma (level3) is suitable for any young person who has creative abilities, teamwork skills and an interest in joining the Creative Industry. You will have particular interests and high levels of creative ability in at least 4 of the disciplines. You also need to have 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and Maths.

About the course:
The Diploma in Creative and Media is a new way of learning which will enable students to combine practical and employable skills to prepare them for their future careers. This includes seeing a project through from start to finish, identifying an audience and their needs and learning about the business side of the creative and media industries.

With a diploma students can progress into further and higher education, training or future employment within or outside the creative media industries.

The Diploma in Creative and Media is for learners who want to:
  • Develop an understanding of the creative process
  • Develop skills in the broad context of the creative and media sectors
  • Find out about employment in the creative and media sectors
  • Apply their learning in work-related tasks.

The Diploma learner is not a design student, nor a dance student - he or she is a student of the process of creativity.

Course Content:
All levels of the Diploma in Creative and Media include the following areas:

Explore your creativity: How do your surroundings impact on your creativity?
Thinking and working creatively: Exploring, experimenting, and developing your ideas, skills and techniques.
Principles, processes and practice: The skills, techniques and processes to turn your ideas into reality.
Creative businesses and enterprise: An understanding of real situations and the skills that you need to succeed in the industry, such as time management, independent learning and team work.

The following are compulsory units:
  • Capture
  • Show
  • Interaction
  • Commission
  • Evaluation
  • Investigation

A minimum of 4 disciplines must be evidenced across the whole of the course.

At least 4 or the 6 units must contain a minimum of 2 disciplines.

Up to 2 units may focus on 1 discipline alone.

Each learner overall programme may be constructed around 1 or 2 disciplines which may feature all the 6 units.

Any individual discipline may contribute to 2 or more units.

Learning Style:
Individual and group work in classrooms, workshops, studios, project work and visits. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

Equipment Requirements:
Additional costs may be incurred for visits such as theatre trips and for project work.

Assessment:
Is varied and includes coursework, assignments and practical exercises. Some of the units are externally tested and within the programme there is a student led project. This could be a written piece of work, like a report or an investigation, or it could be a practical piece of work, like an art installation, a website or a play.

Progression:
The Advanced Diploma enables you to progress to a university degree in any number of subjects including animation, textiles, dance, journalism or film. Alternatively the Diploma could help you head towards a career as a creative and media professional.
