Creative Digital Media

Is this course right for me?

This course is for students who wish to develop a professional and creative approach to media practice using computer based applications.

What will I be learning?

In the first year you will explore a range of digital skills and approaches to media production. Modules are based around specialist pathways in: photography; film-making; music and sound production and web design/animation, through utilising cutting-edge digital applications. Students are not required to have knowledge of programming. It is possible to mix pathway modules, and work across areas to an extent, but students are expected to select a specialism. The course is underpinned by core modules that will develop knowledge of specialised media software and give students a hands-on knowledge of how these softwares integrate.

How will I learn?

The programme uses a variety of teaching and learning methods. These include tutorials, seminars, lectures and workshop activities. Self directed study and individual research are also key learning methods. Modules are introduced through briefings, discussion and practical workshops. Seminars and critiques encourage group interaction and personal critical reflection. The programme is assignment based and requires students to engage in independent study and directed research activity. Coursework is assessed at the end of every module and indicative grades awarded to all assignments. All work is exhibited at the end of the year and students also work toward external exhibitions of their work.
Trips and visits, alongside a programme of visiting practitioners, also form a crucial element of the way you will learn. The course has strong links with the South West media industries and learning will often take place in conjunction with professional practitioners and clients. Lecturing staff are experienced practitioners in the fields of photograhy, television, music production and web design.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the foundation degree you may wish to progress to the final year of a media degree at the University of Plymouth. You are also able to apply for other appropriate courses, or find employment in the media and music industries. Past areas of employment, in which students have been successful, include: web design; advertising; animation; photography; games design; film and video editing; film production and marketing.
