Year 1

Introduction to Writing

Take one foundational, year-long module that provides you with a strong foundation in creating characters, dialogue, story structure and writing for a range of formats including poetry, short fiction and non-fiction

You also choose two from the following list of optional choices. These courses are designed to help you build upon the writing skills that developed in the foundational module, Introduction to Writing.

Year 2

Writer as Researcher

You take one year-long course that has the writer as researcher at its core. You will examine editorial processes and the ways research and theoretical perspectives can enrich your work. This study supports the creation of a new piece of work.

You have the chance to develop your abilities to write across a range of genres and media, by choosing from two or three of the following courses:

  • Intermediate Feature Writing
  • Environmental writing
  • Writing for Children
  • Playwriting
Year 3

Extended writing project

This provides the opportunity to stretch your skills in the writing of a full-length novel, a collection of short fiction, non-fiction or poetry.

You also further develop your talents and gain more industry experience in preparation for graduating, by choosing from two or three of the following courses:

  • Career and Project Module
  • Hypertexts - Creative Writing in a Digital Culture
  • New Nature Writing
  • Writing for Performance

Studying a joint degree allows you to interact with experts in related areas, as well as form creative working relationships across different media.

In second year, you can choose to increase your Creative & Professional Writing studies to follow a Major pathway.
