Course programme

The programme offers a comprehensive programme of study within the context of a modular framework of sociology, law and humanities.

It will be of particular interest to those wanting a career, or improved prospects in the probation service, prison service or police service.

The degree will also benefit those seeking employment as fraud officers, child protection officers, crown prosecution officers, customs and excise personnel and para-legal employees. Unlike the welfare and crime prevention focus of the BA (Hons) Criminology degree, the BSc (Hons) Criminal Justice and Legal Studies degree places itself firmly within the institutional enforcement, public protection and prosecution model, with the emphasis on risk assessment and public protection.

In addition to offering a mixture of core courses and elected options, the degree also adopts a comparative perspective where possible, thereby encouraging an appreciation of the work of different criminal justice agencies and the processes involved. The programme also aims to equip students to develop analytical and problem-solving skills and to foster an understanding of the socio-legal context within which the criminal justice and other agencies operate.
