Course programme
Criminology is concerned with the nature, patterns and explanations of criminal behaviour. Students examine the changing patterns of criminal behaviour, study a range of explanations, and understand the repercussions for the individual and society.
The course draws upon sociology and psychology for a social and individual understanding of criminal behaviour. Students develop a questioning and critical approach to the understanding of criminal behaviour, as well as skills in analysing theories and evidence and applying research methods to develop knowledge.
Assessment
All modules are assessed and a range of assessment methods are used, including structured essays, reports, case studies, critiques, reviews and formal examinations.
After the course
Employers value the qualities and skills of criminology graduates, and most students find suitable work within a short time of graduation. A number of students also go on to study at postgraduate level.
Typical employers include local and central government, the Police, HM Prison Service and the National Probation Service, further and higher education institutions, and charitable, counselling and voluntary organisations.
