The AS Level concentrates on fundamental skills of determining the credibility of evidence from a wide range of sources and assessing and development of argument. A2 builds on AS work, developing higher level skills including the resolution of dilemmas and more complex critical reasoning. Students study a wide range of materials across many disciplines, from accounts of road accidents to statistical material, newspaper articles, publicity leaflets, academic journals etc. Much of the material is produced by students themselves. Classes involve many lively discussions.

About this course
There are no specific entry qualifications but at least Grade C in GCSE English Language is desirable. The ability to think critically and the desire to develop new skills are the most important prerequisites.

What will I study?

Duration:
One year for AS Level and a further year for A Level.
Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
How will I be assessed?
All units are assessed by examination. In each year there are two papers, of either one hour 15 minutes or one hour 45 minutes.
What can I do afterwards?
This course provides a wide range of transferable skills, demonstrating to both universities and employers the ability to grasp and analyse a wider range of issues than those normally covered within subjects. It provides necessary abilities for potential managers as well as for those hoping for an academic career.
Are there any additional costs involved?
To make the best of this course, you must be willing to read as widely as possible and be prepared to be challenged by unexpected ideas. Open-mindedness is the key to success.
