Critical Thinking is about the process of arriving at reasoned judgements, which can be explained and supported.
This course in Critical Thinking is different from all other AS GCEs It doesn't involve learning any facts, but as the title suggests, it is about learning how to think and reason, as well as how to write in a coherent and logical way.
The course covers:
" Elements of reasoning, e.g. ways of presenting an argument
" Evaluating reasoning, e.g. looking at the credibility of different types of sources
" Recognising and evaluating assumptions
" Clarifying expressions and ideas, e.g. pondering the meaning of words
" Presenting arguments

Learning Styles
" Thinking tends to be spoken in: discussion, debate, conversation, questions and answers.
" It is inspired by and discussed around: articles, radio and television programmes, novels, the News.
" Thinking is recorded and explored in: notes, annotation of sources, accounts etc.
" Thinking is practised and developed in writing: multiple choice questions, structured answers

Subject combinations and progression
Critical thinking skills are central to the process of arriving at a reason-based judgement. It is therefore a fundamental academic competency, useful to candidates taking a wide variety of Advanced Subsidiary/Advanced GCE subjects. It will show that such candidates have attained a national standard in skills that will be prized by universities and employers alike.
Subject modules and assessment
The qualification is only available at AS Level and for second year students only. It has one unit with two examination papers in which candidates will be required, for example, to give evidence to support an argument, to write a critical evaluation of an argument or to write a reasoned case using evidence provided.
Each unit will be examined in the summer and last one hour and 30 minutes.
Paper one has two sections. Section A has sixteen multiple-choice questions. Section B has twelve structured questions based on two stimulus passages.
Paper two has two sections. Section A has one essay-type question based on credibility. Section B has two essay-type questions on evaluating arguments.
