Description

There is a global need to increase food security in a sustainable manner as outlined by Sir John Beddington, the Chief Scientific Advisor (2008-2013), when he referred to the “perfect storm” and the interconnections between food production, energy use and water supply in the context of climate change. Crop pathogens, pests and weeds can reduce crop yields in the region of 25 %, and on individual areas of land by 100 %, and therefore their management is a key component of food security. This course is designed to introduce students to the key concepts behind crop protection and methods by which crop diseases, pests and weeds can be managed.

Course programme

The principles and practice of sustainable crop protection to control diseases (fungal, virus, bacterial), pests (insects, nematodes) and weeds in an international context and students will be introduced to the use of cultural practices, biological control, pesticides and host resistance including plant breeding. The course will cover the benefits and limitations of pesticide use, including strategies necessary to minimize the development of pesticide resistance. The role of government policy in relationship to quarantine organisms and the importance of legislation in the development of new pesticides and their registration will be discussed. The value of integrated approaches to crop protection will be theme throughout the course, and by end of which, students will be able to evaluate the different approaches to the development of sustainable crop protection management strategies in the context of climate change.
The course will be run by crop protection specialists Drs Avice Hall, Ian Denholm and Keith Davies based at this center and Dr Jonathan Storkey based at Rothamsted Research. Short course costs are inclusive of refreshments and lunch, and students will be given a CD containing course lecture material.
