Our Cyber Security degree will give you the knowledge you need to become a cyber security specialist. It's ideal if you're interested in becoming a computing professional within the important and growing area of cyber security.
Any organisation that has a computer network or uses the Internet has a potential security risk and will need people with specialised skills to help protect their systems and data. This is where your skills are needed. The course combines theory and practice. It covers cyber security as well as computing hardware and software, such as cloud computing.
You'll get to use our dedicated, self-contained lab. It has its own private internal network and contains some of the latest security equipment and software. You'll have guest lectures and Q&A sessions with experts from the police and industry. And you'll also get to use a range of biometric hardware and software, including 3D facial recognition, hand scanners and iris scanners.
In your first year, you'll gain a general introduction to computing skills and computer security. You'll also gain technical skills - in both computer networks and computer systems - that you'll build on in later years.
You'll then develop technical skills in network security, penetration testing and ethical hacking as well as in biometrics and biometric based security systems. In your final year, you'll cover cryptography and malicious software in detail.
Practical work in your specialist modules and final year project will involve developing appropriate security software. You'll cover the CISCO networking syllabus for Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching. You'll then follow the CCNA Security syllabus. You'll also have the chance to take the industry-standard EC-Council Ethical Hacker Certification.
We encourage you to enrol on our sandwich degree that includes a one-year paid placement in the computing industry. This greatly enhances our student's employability.

Course programme

A variety of teaching and learning methods are used including lectures, problem-based tutorials, practical laboratory sessions and group-based activities. Learning approaches are chosen to be compatible to the method of delivery and can include: case studies, investigations, seminars, resource based learning and independent reading. A wide range of teaching, learning and assessment approaches are used and are seen as beneficial in exposing the student to diverse approaches.

We recognise that different people learn in different ways and as such we use a range of different teaching methods and situations ' lectures, tutorials, laboratories, project work, virtual learning environments etc. ' that best deliver the specific learning outcomes of the modules. Emphasis is placed on active, experiential learning, usually based around a case study, or specific crime/event based scenarios. Students will be actively challenged during tutorials to explain or defend a particular viewpoint/finding/analysis, as they may in the future be expected to defend you expert witness testimony within a legal environment. The use of industry standard packages, such as Encase and Forensic Tool Kit (FTK), .XRY and Biometric hardware and software will be used with real life case studies to develop the practical skills required.

The emphasis is on developing students as confident, independent learners. You are encouraged to access a variety of materials, journals, text books, e-journals etc., as part of your independent learning. This independent learning is directed, with lecturers providing general `reading lists' to prepare for or follow-up classes, specific assignment `reading' as well as a range of formative tasks and activities. All this directed study supports and builds upon the knowledge and skills learnt in class to provide a fuller understanding of the subject.

We also offer certification in EnCase, Ethical Hacking, and Mobile Phone XRY Logical forensics.

Work placement offers students the chance to apply and hone their skills learned during their first two years of their degree, and we have a number of prestigious placements, including GCHQ, Police High Tech Crime Units. the first two years of the degree are aimed at giving students practical skills and in depth knowledge, whilst the final year is focused more on the overarching responsibility of a Digital Forensics Examiner, specifically with the "Legal & Evidentiary Aspects" module.
