Course programme

Dance, BTEC National Award
About the Course
There are five units of study on this course, equivalent to one A level. Normally it is taken over two years, but in certain cases it may be possible to take it in one year after successful completion of AS level Dance.

There are two core units:
* Performing to an Audience
* Dance Appreciation
And three specialist units:
* Applying Contemporary Dance Technique
* Choreographic Principles
* Dance Improvisation
You will be able to successfully complete each unit through structured lessons and individual tutorials, guided research and individual study, practical performance and theatre visits. You will have access to a purpose-built dance studio, high-quality equipment and excellent resources, and there will be professional dance workshops and visits to professional dance performances.
During the course you will perform and interpret dance, create imaginative dances and comment critically on the structure and expressive aspects of dance. Each term you will complete a project for one or more of the units. For example, in the past we have analysed, learned, performed and evaluated the opening to the musical â€-Cats†. In this project you will be assessed on: your analysis of the actions, space, relationship, set,costume, music and lighting; your choreography; your performance of the dance; and an evaluation of your work compared with the original. You will also have a class focusing on contemporary dance technique in the style of, for example, Graham or Cunningham.
You should choose Dance if you enjoy performing, creating and appreciating dance works and if you enjoy watching professional dancers perform. It will encourage lifelong learning and give you access to dance and dance-related interests and careers. You will be taught by well-qualified teachers with substantial teaching experience.
