Course programme

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to take a creative and imaginative approach to dance, whilst exploring the ideas of others and widening your experience and knowledge of dance through theoretical analysis.

In the AS year you will:
  • complete a practical examination where you will be required to choreograph and perform a solo piece and perform in a choreographed duet or trio
  • complete a written examination assessing your knowledge of the dancer as a performer and choreographer. This includes anatomy and physiology; safe studio practice; the process and craft of choreography; analysis of professional dance works

In the A2 year you will develop your skills and knowledge gained in the AS year by:
  • choreographing a group dance and performing a prepared solo choreographed in the style of a specific practitioner
  • completing a written examination on more detailed aspects of dance. This will include assessment of your knowledge of a specific area of study from the genres of ballet, contemporary or jazz and analysis of a set dance work

The course involves a mixture of practical and theoretical work. You will be expected to rehearse in your own time, contribute to college performances as required and attend professional performances throughout the year. You will also have the opportunity to take part in workshops with professional dancers in a range of styles.

No specific qualifications are required for this course, but you should:
  • have recent experience in dance from a dance or theatre school or have taken GCSE Dance
  • have a clear commitment to the subject
  • be prepared to rehearse in your own time as well as in college
  • be prepared to dance in other students choreography
