How the courses are assessed
The course is weighted approximately 80% practical to 20% written work. This enables students to focus on their practical dance skills which provides an excellent preparation for those wishing to progress to study dance at a higher level.
Work is continually assessed. There is no formal exam.
Where does it lead?
Higher education courses in Performing Arts, Dance, Theatre and vocational courses. Previous students have gone on to study Dance at Laban, London Contemporary, Northern Contemporary, London Studio Centre, Lewisham College, Surrey University and Chichester University.
There will be trips to see performances and workshops with visiting dance companies and choreographers. Students will have a number of performance opportunities throughout the year. They will also have the chance to audition for Coalition Dance Company. This course may be taken alongside AS courses in Music and Music Technology and the BTEC National Certificate in Acting. It is equivalent to one A level and is a two year course.

Whether you are a beginner or more experienced the study of dance will challenge you both physically and mentally. The BTEC National Award is a two year programme of study which involves continual assessment rather than leading to a final exam. This is a challenging course which pushes you to become a thinking dancer and to develop strong, creative and technical dance skills.
Students study a range of work by contemporary choreographers and learn and perform repertory from two of these works. Exploring Contact Improvisation Through creative workshops students learn the skills of partner work.
Students learn how to choreograph for stage and for camera.
Rehearsing for Performance& Performing to an Audience
Students form a working dance company, have individual roles within the company, working together in a creative environment to produce a full length piece of work, to be performed in a local theatre.
Dance Leadership Award
All students take part in the Dance Leadership Award programme. This includes community dance outreach activities, leading workshops and developing useful skills in working with others. The award is a nationally recognised qualification and takes one lesson each week in college to complete
