Course description
This course is for drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods who must be given adequate instruction
and training in order to be legally qualified to drive such vehicles. The course is accredited by the Scottish
Qualifications Authority (SQA), the awarding body for this qualification, and is approved for a maximum of 20
delegates. The duration of the course is dependent on the elements required and can generally take up to five
days to complete.
For the Driver CPC: in certain circumstances, time spent training for this qualification can also be counted
towards the Driver CPC qualification. FTA can offer this provision for 18 hours of the ‘basic' course, which
includes modules for the Core, Packages and Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 alone.
Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:
• provide instruction on dangerous goods legislation
• provide the driver with an appreciation of the practical elements of carrying dangerous goods
• provide the driver with the knowledge of how to react in emergency situations
Assessment
There is a formal exam for each module and drivers will take the relevant exam(s) for modules studied.
For the Driver CPC: subject to certain provisions, drivers can opt to restrict exams to relevant subjects only,
without being committed to all of the modules in the basic course given above.
Certification
On successful completion of the exam(s) drivers will receive an ADR Vocational Training Certificate (VTC),
which is valid for five years.
For the Driver CPC: drivers who pass all of the modules formally examined will receive an FTA Certificate of
Achievement in recognition of their success. Otherwise, drivers will receive a certificate of attendance.
Duration
The course can take up to five days to complete, dependent on modules studied and examined.
Agenda: General information
The agenda and syllabus is defined and verified by SQA and drivers can expect to be provided with a
comprehensive course programme designed to reflect the specific requirements of those who are attending
the course. Classes 1 and 7 are specialist modules and are additional to the initial training course
