A one day practical film workshop to learn the basics of documentary film-making including how to write, direct, produce, finance, shoot, edit and sell your finished documentary film.
Suitable for: Everyone welcome aged 18+.
This practical workshop is a whistle-stop introduction to the world of micro-documentaries led by award-winning filmmakers Toni Harman and Alex Wakeford. They have their own film production company and are the founders of Brighton Film Workshops.
It covers everything from coming up with a concept, researching, scripting, directing, the practical techniques for operating camera & sound for plus the basics of editing, marketing, distributing and selling documentaries to make a profit.

About this course
To learn the essentials of documentary film-making - so for everyone to leave having an understanding of the work involved in making and selling a film - which will hopefully inspire people to go out and make their own films!
Anyone aged 16+ with an interest in making films.
No requirements, just a passion to make films!
Certificate of Attendance.
it's a very practical hands-on course, that is fast-paced and fund!
You will be emailed by the course director, Toni Harman and you will be sent a link to book onto the course.
On the day, we will film a range of practical exercises, but we won't make a complete short film.

Covering:
Pre-production:
Writing a proposal, preparing a budget and schedule, sources of finance, writing a documentary script, hiring the right kit, organising the location and a check-list of what to take with you. Plus choosing the right documentary style – whether it is a first person authored film, an observational documentary or something more artistically unique!
The shoot:
Practical demonstrations on how to set up the camera, basic lighting and sound, how to shoot sequences, cut-aways and how to interview your subject including what questions to ask and how to ask them!
Post-production:
Basic editing principles, writing voice-over, choosing music, graphics, grade, dub and finishing your film, plus essentials of marketing, PR, distribution, film festival strategy and selling your film to make a profit!

- 13:30 Practical demonstration of Self-Shooting, how to set up a digital camera, tripod sound & simple lights using professional digital film equipment. Shooting sequences and interviews.

- 15:30 Discussion on all aspects of post-production including writing script, offline and online editing, sound post & finishing your film.
