Dealing with Challenging Behaviour
Understand the need for a person-centred and strengths-based approach to support the well-being of individuals with challenging behaviour
Understand some of the underlying causes of aggression or hostility and how they may be perceived by others, families, other visitors, colleagues
Understand the need to protect the individual with challenging behaviour from abuse, injury or harm and any adverse effects on others Understand some of the underlying causes of challenging behaviour ( i.e. triggers for outbursts) Understand some of the common explanations and myths related to challenging behaviours Understand the processes of dementia and its bearing on challenging behaviours Understand the use of A B C Charts in monitoring incidents and identifying patterns of behaviour Understand the carers role in preventing, defecting or defusing aggressionUnderstand the need for positive and effective communication with the individual with challenging behaviour in defusing and de-escalating situations
Understand some ways to support colleagues who may be subjected to an aggressive or violent outburst to enable them to develop coping strategies

Understand the legal and safety reasons for accurate communicating, reporting and recording in the care environment
