This course enables you to develop and evidence your competence as a dental educator. It combines face-to-face, online and practice-based learning opportunities (through teaching observation), exploring approaches to teaching, learning, curriculum development and assessment in both university and practice settings. It is accredited by the Academy of Dental Educators, and graduates may apply for membership of the Higher Education Academy on successful completion. The course has been designed with the diverse educational roles and responsibilities of dental educators in mind and focuses on how you can develop an informed approach to the design, delivery and evaluation of dental education and training, whether you are new to education or have considerable prior experience. This course provides you with opportunities to develop a sound theoretical underpinning to the practice of dental education in its contemporary policy, professional and practice contexts. In doing so, it aims to foster the development of a full range of dental educator skills, providing you with opportunities to engage in a range of work-related professional development activity. The Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Education is obtained by attending and passing two units:
  • The core unit (Dental Education in Practice)
and either:
  • Workplace Based Learning, or
  • Educational Perspectives for the Workplace.
Both these units shift from a focus on teaching to broader issues of curriculum, educational theory and how these relate to learning and teaching at work.
