We are delighted to offer the Advanced Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing. This is a level 3 qualification and is certificated by City & Guilds (C&G). The qualification meets the requirements of the General Dental Council (GDC) and will afford you entry to the statutory register for dental nurses on successful completion.


Apprentices aged 16-18 years will be paid a minimum of £3.30 per hour whilst undertaking the apprenticeship. Those aged 19 or over will be paid this wage for the first year of the apprenticeship, and will rise to meet national minimum wage criteria in their second year.



Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at learners aged 16 and over who wish to complete an apprenticeship in this specific vocational area.



What will I learn?


The Dental Nursing Apprenticeship programme covers all of the mandatory units set by the awarding bodies, including:


Health and Safety

Cross Infection Control

Radiography


How will I be assessed?


The Advanced Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing consists of three components:

  1. Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing.


This is broken into two separate components:


4 on-line examinations undertaken during the 2 year course. These examinations are 40 minutes long and consist of multiple choice questioning. These will take place at the Colchester Campus.


During the course you will work on producing a portfolio of evidence which will include observations from your assessor, witness statements, assignments, internal verification and more. This portfolio is presented to C&G for external verification.


2. Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths are assessed through examinations, presentation and observed discussion.


3. Level 3 Award in Employment and Personal Learning Skills in Health. This award supports learning as an apprentice and covers employee rights and responsibilities and personal learning and thinking skills. It includes projects on research, team leading and managing your own learning. You will also be required to produce a portfolio of evidence including observations and assignments.


Learners will receive regular individual feedback from their tutors and assessors to support and enable their development. If a learner’s circumstances change significantly during the life of the programme it may be necessary to withdraw them. Individual support is on offer to the employer and candidates at all times.


What award will I achieve?


Advanced Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing which consists of the following components: Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing, Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths and Level 3 Award in Employment and Personal Learning Skills in Health.



What are the entry requirements?

Apprentices will be placed in a dental practice undertaking clinical chair side duties with a contract of employment. Employer agreement and support will be given as assessment in the workplace is an essential component of the programme.


Apprentices will need to evidence a basic level of English and maths by participating in a simple screening procedure at interview. Any follow up support is individually negotiated as required.

5 GSCE’s A-C to include English and maths (GCSE standard minimum grade C) is required, and a science is preferred.



Attendance

Year 1: College attendance one day per week for 36 weeks, work placement four days per week and then full-time out of term time.


Year 2: College attendance one day per week for 36 weeks, work placement four days per week and then full-time out of term time.



Requirements in the workplace

In order to achieve the Diploma part of an Apprenticeship, learners will need to evidence that they can carry out various tasks and use skills related to their job role whilst in the workplace. Each work place will be assessed before the start of the course to ensure that the workplace meets the requirements for the apprentice to gain enough experience to complete the Apprenticeship and to ensure their safety whilst at work
