Design and Build Your Own Website-Beginners

Your Course
Learn how to use Macromedia's Dreamweaver to produce attractive, well laid-out web sites. Dreamweaver is a visual editor for HTML (web) pages, but allows you to do much more than simply edit page layouts. If you want to create and maintain well organised, professional web sites then you need this course. Whether you are already producing your own web pages or starting from scratch, you will benefit from the skills, tips and techniques covered on this introductory course. The course does not require any previous knowledge of HTML (the programming language for the world wide web) but any HTML skills you do have will not be wasted. By the end of the course, using practical hands-on tuition, you will have an understanding of the following features and techniques:
· Workspace - understand the Dreamweaver MX interface and learn how to customize it
· Setting Up a Web site - learn how to set up and structure a website
· Format Pages - use the WYSIWYG tools to format a page (changing fonts, backgrounds, paragraph formatting and list styles)
· Add Links - add internal, external, email and anchor links
· Graphics - insert graphics, understand graphic formats, add background colours, add rollover graphics and Flash buttons
· Import Text- import text from Microsoft Word and format it into a web page
· Tables - create and manipulate tables. Import table data from Microsoft Excel
· Layout Tables - learn how to use tables to layout a web page in a professional manner. Use the layout view to create a layout table
· HTML Editing - learn the basics of HTML structure and how to edit HTML in Dreamweaver
· HTML Styles - make use of Dreamweaver HTML styles tool to format text
· Templates - learn how Templates can be used to speed up web page production and ensure design consistency.
· Testing - learn how to test your web pages in different browsers and test the links in your website
· Publishing - learn how to publish your website to a webserver
On the course, you will learn and practise Dreamweaver skills through guided learning materials. Armed with this knowledge, you will create the components of a small web site on a topic of your choice. Before you start the course, it would be useful to think of one or two topics that you could use as the basis for a simple web site (about five or six linked pages) - for example a hobby or personal interest.
You will benefit from this course if:
· You need to create a web site but don't want to program everything yourself
· You have an understanding of what the Internet is
· You can already use one of the many Windows word processors available today
This course will not be suitable if:
· You do not know anything about the Internet
· You have very limited experience of Windows
· You want to learn to use HTML to produce web pages directly
· You need to know the technical details of how to set up a web server
If you already have experience and a good working knowledge of Dreamweaver at this level, then you may find the Web Design - using cascading style sheets (CSS) course more suitable.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
· Use the market-leading web authoring software Dreamweaver MX
· Create web pages based on good design principles
· Understand web design and internet terminology
· Design and manage a complete website
· Test and upload a website to the internet
· Process images for the web using graphics software
· Make an informed choice on the best web authoring software which will meet design ambitions and budget
