On this course you will receive an intensive training in design thinking through a series of stimulating lectures and practical projects.
The visiting course tutor is Peter Parkinson, author of 'The Artist Blacksmith - Design and Techniques'. Peter, a former designer and art college lecturer is now a full-time artist blacksmith who has taught many short courses in Britain and America.
The course consists of a series of six lectures and rapid projects to illustrate a variety of approaches to the whole business of.
The lectures deal with the kind of language used in the art and design world and methods for generating design ideas. There will be a review of the importance of relevant Art and Design history and a look at design presentation techniques and processes.
The need to deal with abstract ideas and the challenges of materials will be discussed including a project to illustrate how particular qualities of materials affect design.
The course includes a slide lecture illustrating a multitude of approaches to design and design ideas. This is followed by exercises showing the importance of educating the eye to the use of design sources and problem solving techniques.
There will be an examination of a particular design project from inception to completion with a look at the concerns, compromises and considerations which affect design.
