About this course

Five GCSEs at Grade C or above. Ideally students should have studied an Engineering, Manufacturing or Design Technology GCSE course. In certain circumstances, the entry requirements can be relaxed, provided there are good reasons why you did not achieve the required grades. This will be discussed with you at interview.

The Programme
At AS Level you will investigate a range of materials and processes and apply them to the design and manufacture of products, design and manufacture a solution to a real life problem focusing on resistant materials technology.
A2 Level (Year two) you will investigate how modern materials, technologies and processes are applied to product design, including the impact of environmental and economic factors; design and manufacture a commercial product to meet a client's needs.
The Programme Content
AS Level - There are two units of study: Product Development and Product Design. You will study the principles and application of materials and components, hand and commercial manufacturing processes and the application of these to product design. You will visit manufacturing companies and complete a design-and-make project which focuses on the application of resistant materials. There is one written examination and a project portfolio.
A2 Level (Year two) - There are two further units of study: Product Design and Commercial Product Development. You will study modern technologies and materials, design in practise and the use of ICT, systems and control in manufacture. You will complete an advanced design and make project which focuses on the application of resistant materials.
Progression / Careers
Successful students can progress to the Advanced GCE in Design Technology (Resistant Materials Technology) with further progression onto a BEng or B.Sc Degree, depending on the grades achieved.
