Course programme

Designing for the Internet is an introduction to web design aimed at beginners. The course will give you a grounding in current techniques and practices of web design and will give you the skills to create your own website. By the end of the course you will have learnt how to buy a domain, find a web host, upload your website and have it all 'go live'.

Students will work on Apple Mac computers and use a range of software such as Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver as well as an in depth look at setting up a site using the popular content management system WordPress.

The course will touch on some basic principles in designing for different devices e.g. phones, tablets and desktops.

Topics covered

A broad range of topics will be covered, including:

  • basic HTML
  • CSS techniques
  • image optimisation, incorporating video and typography
  • search engine optimisation
  • domain name purchase
  • finding a web host
  • database set-up
  • installing server applications such as WordPress (http://wordpress.org/)

Who should take this course?

It is ideally suited for anyone with a need to understand the current process of building websites and for those with existing design skills who are wanting to move towards web design.

Entry requirements

Students should have basic computer skills and some experience using Adobe Photoshop.

There are a maximum of nine students enrolled on each session to ensure that you get plenty of one-to-one tuition from your tutor and the class can work at a speed to suit the whole group.
