The DET qualification is for those carrying out a teaching role and who need to gain Qualified Teacher status (QTLS).
This corresponds to the full teacher role and is the equivalent of the CertEd or PGCE. The qualification can lead to Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills (QTLS) status once combined with continuing professional development and a period of professional formation. It is a Level 5 award with 120 credits. The Diploma comprises Part 1 and Part 2 and there is a requirement for a minimum of 100 hours of teaching.
The Diploma in Education and Training Level 5 prepares trainee teachers to teach in a range of contexts. It is an in-service qualification, which means there is a significant practice requirement, and as such you should be in a teaching/training role, as this qualification will assess, and provide evidence of, competence when undertaking teaching and/or training responsibilities. Topics covered include:
– planning, delivering and evaluating teaching and learning
– developing the skills to assess learning in education and training
– developing knowledge around theories, principles and models in education and training
– understanding professionalism and the influence of professional values in education and training
For the Diploma in Education and Training Level 5 you will need to provide evidence of 100 hours teaching and 8 observations of teaching, this should total a minimum of 8 hours. For the graded observations at least 2 of these should be graded at Grade 2 of Ofsted’s standards. The observer should be qualified to at least level 5 or be a specialist in your subject area.

About this course
Applicants aged 19 or 20, must possess either a level 3 qualification (or equivalent) or at least 4 GCSEs, one GCE A level, and have a good spoken/written command of the English Language. Equivalent overseas qualifications are also accepted.
Applicants over 21 years of age, who only have the minimum requirements of a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths, plus appropriate work experience, may also be accepted.
All applicants will be asked to provide evidence of their proficiency in English Language equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 5.5 with no section scoring less than 5.00.
Once you have completed the DET Course, your portfolio will be sent for a final External Verification. Once this process has been completed you can become employed in a Full Time Teaching role and apply for your Qualified Teacher Status (QTLS) with the Society for Education & Training (SET). You would need to become a member of the SET in order to apply for QTLS status.

Course programme
The course is delivered as weekly classroom sessions, and independent study. Session are currently once a week for 3 hours, in the evening.
Each module covers a different area of the course and includes activities for you to complete. The course is made up of 12 units and 8 lengthy assignments.
The total guided learning hours for the DET course is 360 plus 100 hours teaching. On average learners complete the full DET Course in just 12 to 24 months.
