Course programme

About the course

The programme is delivered through a variety of methods including practical assignments along with a combination of lectures and workshops supported by group seminars and individual tutorials. A key feature of the programme will be a group critique in which the study group will meet on a regular basis to share ideas and review each other’s progress, thinking and development.

Teaching sessions will be scheduled for late afternoons and evenings in order to accommodate working practitioners.

The University has excellent art and design facilities, some of which have been developed and refurbished: these include a new, custom-designed photography department; the unique workspaces available in the design studio and Innovation Factory with access to the latest design software, including CAD; refurbished studio space for fine artists and designers; specialist workshops; and digital suites for textiles students.

Throughout the course there will be specialist input from discipline-specific staff across the school as well as guest lecturers and industry professionals.

In order to reflect industry working practices, regular online communication between tutors and fellow students will be an integral part of the learning process.

You will be encouraged to work in different environments and to develop your work by applying advanced research and knowledge in a range of commercial, individual and multi-media applications.

What you will learn

At key stages of your studies you will define and agree a learning contract with your tutor. These contracts will identify your needs and goals in terms of how the level will support the development and growth of your professional practice.

You will develop your knowledge and understanding of research and research culture.

You will also learn the principles and practice of digital media. This will form the basis for considerations on definitions of ‘digitality’ and how it affects contemporary culture, thinking and creative practice.

Work on your practical assignments will enhance the development of your applied skills in your chosen medium as well as broadening your thinking and approach to this medium.

Careers and professional development

The MA in Digital Image and Media will give you an opportunity to develop and extend your creative thinking and broaden your professional practice.

By widening your skills and knowledge you will have the insight to understand and interact with national and international markets and be equipped with the intellectual and practical skills to engage with a wider audience. This, in turn, will enhance your career as well as your personal development.

The programme may enable you to work in a research-led environment in aspects of art and design education. Alternatively it may form the basis for further research and study at the level of MPhil, PhD, or Doctor of Practice.
