What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
The aim of this course is to help you to become more proficient at taking and editing your digital images. Specifically you will learn:
How and when to use your camera’s various modes and functions
Transferring, storing and backing up your digital images
Basic image editing and enhancement (but note that this is not specifically a Photoshop course)
Sharing your photographs through various media including print, email and online photo sharing websites
Camera techniques for better focused and exposed images
You will learn by demonstrations, investigative tasks, video tutorials, repetition, practical exercises, internet resourcesand class discussion. At the beginning of the course youwill rate yourknowledge and abilities on the course topics. The course content will not actually be finalised until this information is collected. In this way, the course can, as much as possible, be tailored to meet group and individual needs. Later in the course you will be able to rate yourself again to see what you have learned.
Are there specific requirements for joining?
This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate photographers. More experienced photographers who enjoy sharing their knowledge are also welcome. Please familiarise yourself with your camera manual, even if you don’t understand it all!
Will there be any homework and how long will it take?
Homework will be optional andwill take the form of practising techniques, or reading or viewing additional tutorial materials online. Students can spend as much time as they like on these tasks. It’s a hobby.
What about equipment, clothing and materials?
You will need a digital camera, which can be as simple or as complex as you like. If you haven’t bought one yet there will be discussions in class about which is the best sort to buy. Each week please bring.
Camera with memory card. Please make sure the battery is charged!
Cable or card reader for transferring images
Images on the memory card (if possible).
Your camera’s manual.
Ideally you also need the following. However you can use the PCs in the centre if they are not being used by other groups:
At home you need a relatively modern, functioning personal computer and you need to know how to use it for everyday tasks such as opening, saving and closing files.
You should know how to use and have broadband access to the Internet. If you don’t have any image editing software you might want to consider buying Adobe Photoshop Elements, which costs 60 to 80 pounds for the latest version. Previous versions are usually available on Amazon for around 15 pounds. However, this is not absolutely necessary since most cameras come with basic editing software and it is now possible to store, sort and edit your photographs online for free or for a small fee. Please also bring a pen, a notebookand your glasses, if you need them.
