Who is the course for?
This is for people in the 16-18 year old range who wish to make a career for themselves in the Construction industry, but are at present unemployed or working in a different industry.
Do I need any formal qualifications?
No formal qualifications are necessary but an interest in Highways is essential and applicants must progress through our selection procedure which consists of an initial assessment & interview.
What will I study on the course?
Health & safety, move & handle materials, efficient work practices, basic scaffolding, signing/lighting & guarding, general construction work - kerbing etc, use power tools & equipment, key skills in Application of Number & Communication both at level 1.
How is the course organised?
The main enrolment period for this course is in September, but there will be the opportunity to enter at other times if places are available. The format of the course is 2 days (9.00am - 5.00pm) per week for 1 year.
How will my progress be assessed?
Via written & practical tests in college.
Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?
Depending upon your circumstances you could enrol onto one of our many part-time courses offered throughout the college.
What final qualification will I get if I am successful?
FCA (Foundation Construction Award) in Construction Operations (Highways)
What can I do after completing this course?
Progress on the ICA (Intermediate Construction Award) within the same trade area, an NVQ Level 2 course in the same trade area (you must have gained employment to pursue this option).
Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?
Financial support is available and depends on the type of qualification you are studying and whether you are a full time or a part time learner.
The Education Maintainance Allowance (EMA) scheme enables eligible learners to receive up to £30 per week for studying at College, as well as bonus payments of £100.
The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) scheme enables eligible learners (aged 19 or over) to receive up to £30 per week for studying at College.
College Learner Support Funds (LSF) are available and can provide financial support for eligible learners. Payments can be made towards travel to and from College, registered childcare, fee remission and help with course-related costs.
