A CAREER IN DENTAL NURSING

Most dental nurses work in local dental surgeries. You could also work in specialist dental hospitals, in the dental departments of a general hospital, in community dental services or the Armed Forces. Once qualified and with more experience you could become a senior dental nurse, an assessor, tutor or dental health educator. You may decide to take on a management role and become a practice manager. As an experienced and qualified dental nurse you can continue building up skills that will always be in demand. You could acquire specialist qualifications in areas such as sedation, radiography and oral health. You could apply for a course to qualify as a dental

hygienist or therapist.

Your main responsibilities include supporting the dentist by:

• mixing the materials used for filling teeth

• processing X-rays

• completing patients’ records

• sterilising instruments

• generally keeping the surgery ready for use.
