- an NVQ at level 2 or 3 in an appropriate vocational area
- 4 GCSEs at grade C or above
- a BTEC First qualification in a related vocational area
- related work experience

The City & Guilds qualifications in Hairdressing are designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment or for progression to higher courses.This course is based on the NVQ/SVQ national occupational standards set by the Hairdressing And Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA).
The City & Guilds Certificate/Diploma in Hairdressing is a 9 unit national qualification comprising four core mandatory units and five optional units (one must be chosen from Option 1)

Unit G6. (020) Promote additional products or services to clients
Unit G9. (027) Provide hairdressing consultation services
Unit H27.(028) Create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques
Option Group 1 (Choose any four) All five options may be completed from this group
Unit H33. (029) Style hair using thermal techniques
Unit H23. (030) Provide hair extension services
Unit H24. (031) Develop and enhance your creative hair dressing skills
Unit H25. (032) Style and dress hair to achieve a variety of creative looks
Unit H26. (033) Style and dress long hair
Unit H28. (034) Provide colour correction services
Unit H29. (035) Perm hair using a variety of techniques
Unit H30. (036) Colour hair using a variety of techniques
Unit H31. (037) Provide corective relaxing services
Unit H35. (038) Create complex styles using African Caribeean styling techniques
Unit H36. (039) Style hair using locksing techniques
Unit BT20. (040) Provide Indeian head massage treatment
Option Group 2 (Choose any 1)
Unit G10. (041) Support customer service improvements
