Course programme
Level 5 Module - 15 credits
Module Code: 5FHH1191
Optional Module - BSc (Hons) Respiratory Practice
Module Aim:
The aim of this module is to enable students to identify an area of practice which requires further study. The student will demonstrate skills of critical reflection and self appraisal in identifying and selecting their chosen issue. Exploring the issue in detail using relevant literature and evidence, the student will be able to analyse and apply appropriate knowledge and skills to suggest a possible solution.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge and Understanding:
Successful students will typically be able to:
1. Analyse and evaluate relevant theories, policies and practices as they relate to their chosen area of respiratory care.
2. Demonstrate an appreciation of evidence based practice and research principles.
Skills and attributes:
Successful students will typically be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to access, select and critique materials from a range of sources.
2. Apply intellectual argument to the evaluation of care delivery.
3. Explain fundamental principles related to the chosen subject area.
Module content:
This module offers an opportunity for students to study a topic or work related issue at academic Level 5. It involves students identifying the chosen area for study, developing and negotiating a learning contract which will outline the what, how, when, where and why of the study period, as well as the means of assessment to showcase the acquired learning. The module will provide a rigorous framework for the approval of such study, ensuring the academic level and assessment criteria supports the demonstration of achievement and equivalence of a Level 5 module.
The purpose of the module is to allow students to negotiate with academic staff, and the workplace if appropriate, to focus on an area of study of particular interest. This may be for the enhancement of practice or for the achievement of more in-depth knowledge and skills with particular significance to the workplace and/or student.
Module Assessment:
3,000 word (or equivalent) Negotiated Assignment
Coursework : 100% Weighting: 100%
The principle of 3,000 words or equivalency will govern the limits of the assessment strategy and may include, e.g. reflective essay, case study, portfolio of evidence, presentation and OSCE’s. The individual learning outcomes and assessment strategy will be approved, both internally via the Negotiated Learning Approval Panel (NLAP) prior to commencement of the module. The assessment is negotiated between the student and academic tutor to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes.
